About UsA quick history lessonThe band was formed back in 1993 by Olly Wedgwood and Jon Hooper. They were members of Selwyn College, part of the University of Cambridge, and the band obviously draws its name from these humble beginnings. We'll admit that maybe the name isn't the most original they could have used but we'll just stick to playing good music and worry about name changes later. The band was formed with the intention of performing at charity events, only drawing enough money from events to fund the purchase of new music and supplies to keep the band running. The musical directorThe musical director has changed several times since 1993, mostly due to the student status of the members and the problems that graduation tends to bring! The current musical director is Julian Johnson, a 4th year Engineer. The rest of usToday the band has 20 full time members and also has a long list of guest players available to us. Members are no longer solely drawn from Selwyn College, instead we pull in some of the best musicians from across the Cambridge colleges and departments. We are a varied group of amateurs studying many different subjects and this all helps to add to the atmosphere of the group. See our current members page for a list of our regular players. The musicOur music collection has charts including the traditional big band classics from jazz heroes like Count Basie and Gordon Goodwin, some established funk pieces like Birdland and several vocal numbers such as Till You Come Back To Me and Fever. We use the proceeds of our gigs to fund the purchase of new equipment and music to improve our next performance, effectively a non-profit group. We hope to be releasing a CD in the near future so you can hear us as often as you like.
